Showing Up Gets Easier the More Times You Show Up

  1. Call for an appointment.
  2. Get voicemail.
  3. Leave a message.
  4. Rinse and repeat until I got through.
  5. Make the appointment.
  6. Calendar the appointment.
  7. The day before the appointment, make sure the book is ready to go.
    (The book is always ready to go, this was a follow-through effort.
  8. Get ready before the appointment.
    (Always have a fresh all-black wardrobe at the studio for appointments.)
  9. Drive on over and park.
  10. Bring the portfolio into the waiting area.
  11. Fiddle with stuff or read a magazine.
    (I know I didn’t play on my phone cause, well, we didn’t have any damn phones.)
  12. Get up and go back to the AD, CD, or Editor’s office.
  13. Show the book.
  14. Answer questions and make appropriate comments.
  15. Leave and get a taco on the way back to the studio.
