He got it wrong from the person who began talking about it.
The idea of 10,000 hours also had measurable and quantitative feedback and growth. The number was a tossoff. The idea of of focusing, and growing with consistency and the help of expert guidance was the point. Lost on Gladwell (see twit analogy above), but deeply important.
